modern games:
well designed scripted situations simulate with realistic
looking graphis freedom and intereactivity. plus time freeze,
style and achievements.
but they're not free and not interactive.

more here, where modern game design shows it's flaws:

Do you like interactive novels? If so "Night of the Forget-Me-Nots" is good, (it's a girl's game but it is Horror so boys can play it too), "The noose" was very good to, but not very interactive. Both of these are Jap but translations have been made.

There are also games like Shadowgate, Deja Vu, Uninvited... I love those ones. Graphically challenged by many standards and you'll need something like DOSBox to run them on today's computers.

I love Deja Vu! Of course it does devote 1/4 of the screen to graphics though.

I disagree, I think:

A good game with poor graphics is poor game.
A good game with good graphics is a good game.
A poor game with good graphics is a poor game.

and before anyone says 'Tetris' sure okay, but would NFS on the 3DO been just as good if the graphics had been dire?

There are definitely some good points. The Wii and Wii sports in many ways prove Crawford's theory - I still maintain that it is the perfect mix of gameplay and graphics and as such appeals to the tetris crowd accordingly.

Would NFS been good without the graphics - you know - I think it would have been ok , not great but ok. It certainly introduced some interesting gameplay ideas. I believe Crawford is saying just that - that it needs to be blend of ideas and graphics - not just graphics.

What's the mission of video games?

To entertain?
Or to simulate reality?
Maybe both.

If entertaining is the only mission, then a scripted situation where
a man loses his pants and you have to push "X" is a very good game.
That's the basics of all final fantasies and KillZones.

If realistic graphic is more important for reality simulation than
free volition, then the developers will be pleased and the
consuming mass is satisfied, but it is a simulated satisfaction.
Created by cosmetics.
It will go one like that.
People don't want to suffer under free volition, they want to be happy,
and a life as well as a game which both simulate happiness is
very good.

hmm I thought we already fixed this. Try coming in from http://3do.cdinteractive.co.uk rather than http://www.cdinteractive.co.uk/3do/forum/.
