How is Burning Soldier beaten?

Stage 16 (underground) - Can't understand how to beat this boss? I get him down to red, & deplete his last bit of energy. At this point a glow surronds the ship, my controls lock, and I'm destroyed (despite having ample energy)

What the heck am I missing here? (it`s happened twice!)

I vaugely remember this happening to me. Its either something like you have to destroy it with the last shot as a charged blaster shot or you just have to destroy it fast enough. The game is much easier with two players.

I went through it a little bit last night on freedo controling the 1st and 2nd players at the same time lol. I managed to beat that level but I also used the debug menu and cheated a little bit. I find the game a lot harder than it used to be for some reason. I do remember beating that boss on the console long ago though i remember getting fed up and had to try like 3 times though. And going through all the stages before the boss again is no fun

2 player mode seems no easier ... the game cuts your energy bar in half! Has anyone ever tried w/3 or 4?
