Hanafuda on older consoles

Post by 3DO Experience » Sat Mar 30, 2013 12:25 am

I'm looking for Hanafuda / Koi Koi games for my older consoles. I've checked out ones up the SNES but I think I'll need something with better graphics as it's hard to make out the cards sometimes. I'd also like one either with English or as little many Japanese menus as possible. Basically anything up into the GameCube era, I don't have a working PS2 so those can be ignored.

Anyone even know what I'm talking about?

Nope. Thanks to you though, I typed it in the search engine and have 1 new fact floating around in my brain.

Best wishes in your search.

Hanafuda is a set of cards for playing games back when card games were deemed illegal in Japan. Koo-Koi is probably the most common game played with them.

Well, in a way. At one point foreign card games were illegal, and at different points in history (like many countries) gambling with card games was illegal and even having cards could get you in big trouble depending where you lived. Some decks were made illegal simply because the games played with them involved gambling. Even Hanafuda cards are linked to gambling, being popular with the Yakuza, but they are now the most popular cards in Japan kind of how a poker deck is now the standard deck you find in the USA. As far as I know Hanafuda never got caught up in the black list of cards.
