I recently picked up a Sega Master system

I've never owned one before. What are some of the better games I should be keeping an eye out for?

I always loved Golden Axe, more on the master system than the mega drive as it just felt more playable. Sonic is still impressive and a very good platformer as well.
Most of all the master system, in my opinion, still has the greatest Double Dragon on any system. Almost as good as Target Renegade on the CPC........and thats saying something.
The end credits will choke you up especially if you completed the game on 2 player.

Hm. Phantasy Star, Alex Kidd 1 or 2 (Miracle World and The Lost Stars), Fantasy Zone I or II, Hang-On, Wonder Boys 1, 2 or 3 (1 and 3 are my favorites), Sonic the Hedgehog (It's basically the Game Gear version, but full screen on your TV), Time Soldiers, Double Dragon, Rambo First Blood Part II, and just about any light gun game for the system (Gangster Town, Rescue Mission, etc).

If you feel like paying extra and importing from the UK, then Vampire: Master of Darkness and Ninja Gaiden are fun titles too.

The console is region free? I have the Master System II.

UK and Brazilian carts will work in a US system. Not sure about Japanese ones though (weren't they shaped differently? I do not remember).

I've personally owned Shadow of the Beast (UK) and Mortal Kombat III (Brazilian), and both worked fine. Never did get around to buying Ninja Gaiden unfortunately, had to play that one through emulation.

Zillion - A fun Metroid-like action/adventure/shooter
Gangster Town - Possibly my favorite 8-bit light-gun game
Phantasy Star - One of the few traditional RPGs that I enjoy
Golvellius - A Zelda-like action-adventure
Golden Axe Warrior - Another Zelda-like action-adventure

Looks really cool, but I heard there is no save feature. Any idea how long a game it is?

Old post, but figure I should respond... :)

You're right, there's no save feature. I played the game in short bursts by learning each room and mapping the game out on paper. My goal was just to make it a little bit further each time. That was enough to occupy several hours. Then, once I had the game mapped out, it probably took about an hour to go from start to finish.

So you end up repeating parts of the game several times, but overall, I enjoyed it quite a bit. I think it helped that I approached it like I was a kid in the 80s!

Cool, I appreciate the info. Sounds like my type of game actually. I'll probably pick it up soon.
