The M2 - The wasted summer of '96.

So, what exactly is Pon Pon? Any more info? I gotta say, those graphics don't exactly scream 64-bit
I have a feeling that they made the graphics appear like that so that their matured audience would be able to see what is going on.
Kinda reminds me of 'Big Brain Academy' actually. Primitive graphics, aimed at an older audience ... who knows, maybe this title also helped to fight of alzheimers (check out the picture ... sorta looks like it )I have a feeling that they made the graphics appear like that so that their matured audience would be able to see what is going on.
I'll guess I'll recycle my earlier comments about Pon PonA series of games for testing the elderly. Includes, memory, hand eye co-ordination, reaction time, judgement and more.
I thought I knew quite a bit about M2, but theses latest scans have proved otherwise. I've never seen or heard of either of these titles. Thanks very much for the scans, I've always been very curious about the M2 kiosk programs. Keep adding any info you got, and I'll keep soaking it up!Kinda reminds me of 'Big Brain Academy' actually. How about M2 Clayfighter? Was this an enhanced version of the cancelled 3DO title? It is interesting that Interplay ran ads that showed the box art for 3DO Clayfighter, so I'm guessing it was fairly close to completion. And work had evidently gotten under way on the M2 project, since some of it was later used in the N64 Clayfighter titles (63 1/3, Sculptor's Cut) Are there any known early screenshots that exist for the M2 game, or does anyone have additional info?

That was just their excuse for not making the hardware docs available.Mobius wrote:I've been reading through the 3DO SDK, and this is addressed at one point. Basically, what it comes down to, is that you can't write directly to the hardware because there are so many different hardware variations and configurations. There were lots of plans for more configurations with different amounts of RAM, VRAM, etc.
Not if you are *forced* to do so. Moreover, the OS was neither solid nor fast, this was a huge complaint of many developers back then.Mobius wrote:Writing to an OS instead of hardware has a lot of advantages as a programmer [...]
I dunno, I can definitely see their logic. Without writing to an OS, how can you guarantee that software that works on, say, the FZ-1 will also work on the 3DO Blaster? This is what abstraction is for.WindowsKiller wrote: That was just their excuse for not making the hardware docs available.
Now that very well may be true. I can understand forcing developers to use an OS, but if that OS is crappy, that's a problem. Not if you are *forced* to do so. Moreover, the OS was neither solid nor fast, this was a huge complaint of many developers back then.

Finally got my hands on a 3DO M2 dev card. Anyone here has the M2 SDK 3.0? I only have 2.7 currently, but want to use the last one.
//edit:
Come on, someone must have the 3.0 SDK. I give a copy of 2.7 in return.

There was a fighting game one w/a girl vs. some kind of dinosaur, and also one featuring a boat on the water with a dolphin swimming around.
i saw thos pics in gamefan magazine. i thought they said it was a tech demo for the ultra 64(n64)

Subject of M2 demo shots
Firstly a big hello to everyone , I am not sure if there are any others from down under on this forum but it would be nice to know that i'm not the first.
can anyone shed some light on a photo I once saw of Matsushita staff demonstrating an underwater game involving a dolphin on supposedly up and running M2 kit? It reminded me a lot of ecco at the time and my memory was jogged again when i saw endless oceans demoed on the wii.

These pictures are stolen, I have them on my hard disk since 2006. I think they were coming from a Japanese auction, don't remember. Also funny that he's from Canada but the system is located in China. Wonder how it ended up being there.Trev wrote:First time I've ever seen a pic of Viz House ...

Oh, and he claims that VizHouse is one of only two known pieces of software for the system, which is of course long-outdated information. I told him about that, but he doesn't seem to care.
Anyway, quite a fishy auction.
Found this interesting tidbit while digging through the internet ... this quote is taken from a posted resume ...
I've always heard that this project was initially slated for M2, but this seems to indicate that work was well along with it. Perhaps the N64 version owes alot to the M2.Also produced and wrote the script for a project for Spectrum Holobyte, creating a version of "Top Gun" for the 3DO M2 platform, through the delivery of the final milestone. I was granted full admission into the Writers' Guild of America on the strength of my scripts for this project. Work included legal searches for title copyrighting, internal and external weekly status reports, and pressing CD-ROMs.

Wow that ingame footage of D2 makes me want that version sooo bad. Also that Iron and Blood demo had some really cool graphical effects that really weren't seen on any other console at the time (like the light shimmer on the plate armor that changes according to perspective). I often wonder what it would have been like if M2 actually materialized as a gaming console . I miss those 3DO days of old.
