Sweet memories...

..or "Why I didn't get my 3DO"

Hi to all the community! I'm new here.
Name's Andre and I am writing from Italy.
A recent interest in the 3DO brings me here, and I'd like to share some views on retrogaming with whom might be interested. (I read that yours very 3DO KID does a lot of cross-posting, and likes to talk about it :) )

I recently stumbled upon and auction for a Panasonic FZ-1.
Boxed, wrapped, brand new, the lot.

Interest in the machine raised. (I feel very "sympathetic" to its architecture) I remembered knowing something about it. I searched, scoured the web, watched 3DO KID vids ( :D great sense of humor)

After I gathered all the info, I decided not to buy (mind you, price wasn't really an issue). I won't be part of the community of people who appreciate this machine first hand: and what a shame it is!!

Together with the 3DO, I rediscovered the cursed generation of 90s consoles which didn't quite cut it before serious 3D took all the headlines.
Commodore CD32, Atari Jaguar and the 3DO had so many unexplored possibilities, its just a shame we couldn't put them through their paces.

Studiyng the 3DO I was disappointed with the lack of good "old school" games. No way: it was the era of the new not-so-3D-cheesy-movie-acting kind of games, which I couldn't get past.

Mind you, I have peculiar tastes when it comes to games: I don't like platformers, I don't like arcade-ish driving games, I can't get past the first FPSs.

I guess most of the drive comes from memories. I grew up on Amiga games, which is why I ended up getting a CD32 for my retro fix.
I wonder how many of you appreciate Cinemaware titles of yore.
To me they represent the essence of retro gaming; they where original, had atmosphere, had a deep feeling about them, and went past the limitations of the machine in a very imaginative way (thinking about the first person sequences of It Came from the Desert). Really no need for 3D.

Had that fantasy been sought after, we would have some more gems now to enjoy with OUR retro machines.

Still, it's such a pity I won't enjoy a 3DO, it's such a great piece of kit and honestly was the best machine of the three I mentioned... 8)

I'd like to say hello to anyone in the board, have fun and enjoy your gaming.

I never really understood why the 3DO didn't have some classic games on it, because obviously it could have done them some justice. A 2D SHUMP, a top down racer, some 2D platfomers, it would makes sense but no...

Welcome to the board :)

thanks...

3DO lacks classics because at the time developers were concentrated on "realism" rather than gameplay (FullMotionVideo was a big hit then, but for me today it only leaves tons of cheesy acting).

Between the ones you mentioned, I find the top down racer genre particularly lacking.

Unfortunately these are the games that got old better for me, the ones I still enjoy today, and the games I would have been particularly chuffed of playing on the 3DO.

On the other side, Need for Speed and Wing Commander III are really quality titles wich were groundbreaking and still look the part.
I wish we had time to let some games push the hardware a little more...

Hi,

Andre
