Spec for a decent ish PC

Post by 3DOKid » Sat Jan 29, 2011 11:39 pm

What's an okay CPU/Graphics card for modern PC gaming?

Or rather

How much RAM does a does a decent graphics card have and what speed does it run at?

and is an Intel i3 up to much or should I get an i5?

I generally make sure my chip is top of the line. It's one of the cheaper items to max on and you're generally okay for years with that, even allowing a slightly lesser graphics card in on the configuration. As for current graphics cards... god, I have no idea.

Not since right after they became the standard. In 1996.

If you're trying to do gaming, then an i7 or an AMD Phenom II (Quad core) should do the trick. For RAM, four gigabytes of DDR2 800mhz memory (at the minimum). DDR3 stuff is common now so you probably want to end up going with that instead. Videocard-wise, any of the modern Nvidia or ATI/Radeon cards are the way to go. I can't recommend one because it depends on what you're willing to pay. 1gb minimum though if you want to do some gaming.

If you just want a PC for basic purposes like browsing the web, I think a dual-core machine (either Intel or AMD, doesn't matter) will be fine. No fancy graphics card needed, so go for something cheap.

I have a computer room, since I do computer stuff for work from home. But it's more of a grave yard for computers.

I do have server, which I believed was okay, but it is, I suppose, 3 possibly 4 years old.

So, yesterday I installed XP on this Dual Core, 6Gb server believing it to pretty processing powerful because I wanted to convert some video files to .mp4 and I wanted to play Total War Medevil 2 or whatever. Anyway, the crappy laptop I bought from Supermarket last spring for £249.99 kicks the servers backside.
