It's an early mainframe game that had later computer ports, heavily based on D&D. The first game with a randomized dungeon each time. They have some fancy term for that these days.
Either download the horribly complex Nethack or google Rogue browser to sample the original. Both use ascii graphics.

Ah, the term is "procedural generation". Anything out of Japan called Mystery Dungeon is aping Rogue.
