Hi, I just joined up here, I've been a 3DO fan for years now but only just got around to joining some forums (i joined 3DO today too but it seems pretty dead there now unfortunately) I bought a 3DO second hand when I was a kid when everyone else was getting PS1's and Saturns and never regreted the decision.

Anyway, I've just made a top 40 3DO games for my website and wouldn't mind getting some feedback, I'm pretty confident that one day I can upgrade it into a "top 50" just need to find some more classics :)

My list is here http://www.retro-sanctuary.com/TOP%2040 ... GAMES.html

You rated D lower than Soccer Kid? *Slaps you right int he face* LOL in all seriousness I think it deserves better than in the 30's. However I agree with your rating for Space Hulk. Nice screen shots BTW.

PS. 3DOKid has a nice top 50 done in video form.

PPS. Someone needs to do a top 50/25 of 3DO only titles. Not me though, I'm far too lazy. :P

LOL, I reckon a top 25 3DO only games would definately be impossible, unless you filled the entire list with really rubbish games.

As Trip Hawkins would say, imitation is the greatest form of flattery.

Anyway, I take it you haven't seen the awesome, 3DOKid Top 50 best 3DO games. For shame.

I'm already quite familiar with your videos, after checking the dates they were added I would say I must've watched them straight after they were originally put up.

Interesting list ... the bottom 20 surprised me a bit, but the top 20 were pretty spot on w/my own opinion.
You rated D lower than Soccer Kid?
Soccer Kid is great! :P

Nice to find another who shares my views of Immercenary too.

My only gripe ... where or where is Twisted?

Thanks for the kind words, I'm probably still not totally finished with the list, I really want to make it a top 50, and I'm pretty confident that it would be possible (there's certain games that look like they could be top 50 material, like taiketsu rooms, iron angel 2, Casper but I can't find copies of them) as well as this there are actually at least two games (total eclipse and blade force) which I've been playing a lot recently and have started to think aren't top game material so I would be happier if I found 12 or 13 more games and took them out.

Another thing I'm wondering is whether I under valued Po'ed, D and possibly Trip'd, I'm not talking about a massive change but maybe they deserved to be 5-6 places higher. It's difficult to know when to stop with this sort of thing, I don't want to be constantly making minor changes for years!

Apart from that I spent ages with powers kingdom, and I really couldn't decide if it's a good game or not! I spent a good amount of time playing it during my childhood, but I can't judge it for the life of me  (or other tactical RPG's like FF Tactics for that matter) They're just not really my type of games.

Firstly, go with your gut instinct, it's usually the right one. Unless you are me. Which you aren't.

I personally think Total Eclipse is brilliant. And it still very playable. I actually completed it recently too, and while it is showing it's age a little, I still think it's better than a lot of shooters out there today. Considering it was the U.K. release title. It's like Crash N' Burn. Both release titles (in different territories) but pretty good games, all considered.

As for Soccer Kid, you're on your own. It looks, feels, smells and is, a pretty average Amiga game for ever trapped in 1989. Meh.

Well i'm not really on my own in either respect, most of the reviewers from the magazines of the time said that soccer kid was a good game (as well as IGN for their GBA review) and most of them said Total Eclipse was terrible.

Total Eclipse is bland and repetitive, there's no two ways about it, the textures and level designs are completely un-inspired and are constantly recycled and the music is also absolutely horrible, it's actually inferior to the earlier Star Wing/Star fox is every single respect but graphics

Now we're both from the UK so I think we can say that the problem with Soccer Kid is that it's a bit too "english" it's quaint right? and the graphics are obviously of an Amiga standard so they're well below what the 3DO could do, but it is a good game which is the important thing.

where it comes to Blade Force I have no idea what the critics or 3DO fans see in it at all, to me it is just like an ultra boring tech demo, I actually hate that game, I'd forgotten how much I hated it until I got it down out of the loft to take screenshots of it and after 20 minutes of playing I just felt like I wanted it to end.

Powers Kingdom I spent a lot of time playing in my youth, so I'm not sure if nostalgia is clouding my judgement, not only that but I don't particularly like any Tactical RPG at all including Vandal Hearts and FF Tactics which most critics absolutely gush about, so I don't know what to make of it.

Bladeforce gets a lot of love - but I'm with you, I have no idea why!

The problem I've always had w/Blade Force was that there was little sense of direction in the game. Large levels are nice, but I never really did get a grasp on what to do. Plus, I think the game taxed poor 3DO beyond it's ability. An M2 sequel would have been sweet ...

You say that, but I played Death Trap Dungeon on the PS1 last night, and it was woeful in terms of graphics (and controls, and camera) it looked no where near as good graphically as Blade Force.

A good 3D 3DO game, looks better than a second generation PS1 game. Go and stick Krazy Ivan in, or Air Combat. Hauzer/WCIII/BladeForce are noticable better.

Programmers only seem to have had 3 years to get the best from the 3DO (EA, Riverhill, 3DO Studio) and did really well, but it seems to have taken much longer with the PS1, even longer with the Saturn. I guess they are more complicated.

thats the difference between writing to operating systems and writing to hardware which is why the 3do was easier to exploit - I still believe it had plenty left in the tank whereas with sega it seemed like only the in house guys knew what they were dealing with (N64 too).Adding a second processor late in development put third parties behind as they were writing to incorrect specs for the saturn - sony third parties were spoilt by the graphics library handed to them (same routines for sky , ravines , ground texture - just enter colour and size) . This made early sony games look good but gameplay and programmers were lazy.

I have a big stack of PS1 games now, and frankly the first gen of PS1 games look utterly aweful. even by a 3DO fanboys standards. Of the ones that stand out: WipeOut, Ridge Racer and believe or believe it not, Toshinden look awesome. But a lot, I mean a lot, look really bad. (WC IV, Krazy Ivan, Air Combat and Death Trap Dungeon -- I'm looking at you!)

I'll try and clarify that... in an attempt to make sense:

Crappy dev houses will always make crappy looking and playing games regardless of platform.
