I love this game. There are handful of games I have to steer clear of, because if I'm not careful, I'll play them. For example: Black, Shenmue, puzzle bobble and Power Kingdoms.

So for 5 hours today... OK - so I've got the characters Clay, Iron and the star of the show Pumpkin. And we've, I say we've, but Iron and Clay got wiped out 3/4 of the way through but I just killed Medusa and I'm now in the Mushroom Forest.

I seem to be making more money this time...

Am i the only to have played this through...? Just wondering.

I only played it for about 30 to 45 minutes. The lack of a story really makes it hard for me to play an RPG.

You know, I didn't like this game on the first pass for the "no real story" reasoning, which has always struck me as kind of essential to an rpg. But it grew on me. It was quirky and I think a little groundbreaking with stuff that has since become common in games like Final Fantasy Tactics.

Also, Shenmue made my inner child fall asleep.

Somewhere, and always meant to look into it, Squaresoft and Microcabin are interlinked. Certainly in Luciennes quest you get a whiff of Final Fantasy, and in Power Kingdoms too.

From what I can make out around the start of the 1990s seven developement houses, including Square and Micro Cabin created some sort of Japanese club called "Disk Original Group". They developed a bunch of games and published them under Square.

Now Guardian Wars wasn't made by DOG or published by Square, so what I reckon is likely is that people moved about. A guy working for Square moved job and ended up at Micro Cabin and vice-verse. Some of the spells are straight copies, as are some of the monsters and GFs...

I played through Guardian War a few months ago. I think it is a great game, and the minimal story didn't really bother me like I thought it would. It has a very good combat engine (I never did get bored w/all the fights) and plenty of variety in the enimies and allies The games graphics and music still impress me today. The challenge is more or less spot on ... perhaps a bit easy for rpg vets, but solid for the moderate player.

I highly reccommend playing it through to the end! (although the ending may be a bit of a letdown)

OK - I'm at the whale. The under-water levels are a bit of a chore but the whale is tough - I'm going to re-address my strategy :)

The boss music? It's from Total Eclipse right? or is it not?
