Funcoland Price paper April 1997

i scanned these back when i first got my scanner and i found them on a CD, this was the first paper i ever got from funcoland (the store might have been open for 4 or 5 months by this time in my area), and i used it to hunt down other games from the other Funcolands in my area
these pics are around 1073x843, so im not sure if they will be that size when you guys look at them

im missing 5 months from 1997, 2 months from 1998, 2 months from 1999, and 6 months from 2000 of these price papers

they stopped doing price papers sometime during the first 2 months of 2001

Hey, I remember that Highland, Indiana Funcoland... I went there a few times when I visited my grandparents. I got a boxed/complete copy of Earthbound there.

I think it turned into a GameStop. It's a shame they got bought out.

We really don't have anything on that scale in the U.K. The closest I've personally got is the game shops in Japan, and even they seem to pale against this. I mean, according to that last link, there were some 4,000+ outlets. That's simply not possible in either Europe or Japan. To be honest mate, I can only look at the images in awe, but I can't relate. No one sold 3DO games in Europe after 1998 i guess.

In the U.K. we had EB, which became Game, and they have now bought out GameStation but it's all very much small fry in comparison to what you guys have in the U.S. The video game retail market in the U.K. is dead and has been dead since before 1999. There is no real competition apart from Internet.

The Internet is all well and good - if, and only if, you know what you are looking for...

And there is a point to this. I just can't say right now. Let's see what happens in the next 12 months eh?

Unfortunately, GameStop blows, so you're not missing much. They stopped stocking games for classic systems long ago. The oldest thing they carry now is PS2, with the exception of a few N64 games that might still be sitting around in a neglected corner. The worst part is that they bought out pretty much every other game store in the country, so the only alternatives are eBay and, if you're really lucky, local game stores.

You must live near me. I live in Warren, MI. I used to go to that Funcoland to get Sega Genesis games when I was like 7. Now it's a Gamestop and it sucks. I go there from time to time since it's literally down the street, but I don't usually buy anything.

What city do you live in?

Hmm, well seeing the Funcoland pricelists is cool. Brings me back some. As for the history of the company that has singlehandedly neutered the gameing scene in the US, I could care less. I hate Game Stop, always have and always will.

you must be a young one compaired to me, i was 26 when a store opened near me

i did the same thing, i think ive stopped into gamestop maybe 4 times in the past 3 years, since i dont really collect for anything after the Dreamcast, even tho i own an Xbox and GC. i quit going once the NES games dried up which i think was the last classic system they sold.

I was all excited at the idea of Funcoland - and now it's tainted. It sounds lke Game in the U.K. It's the only show in town, and it's rubbish.

Their second hand games are often more expensive than the Internet for brand new games. For example. I can get virtua fighter 5 for the PS3 anywhere on earth (online) for £30.00 brand spanking new. In game it's £42.99 for a second hand version. New? That'll be £49.99.

Gamestation used to be OKish, and they still stock some retro stuff. It varies from town-to-town what it is, but it's now part of Game.

The alternatives? I used to love CEX. They had a few places in London and the odd store dotted around the UK. They were pretty good. They had a shop around the back of Tottenham court road that had a cellar full of retro machines and games, and it was like a mini museum. It was brilliant. The worst thing about CEX was the smell. It reeked, I mean really stunk. Geek/Nerd sweat. Just fowl. So what did they do? Ditched the retro museum and kept the smell. ...and made all the staff the most obnoxious, useless, arrogant people that ever walked on earth. I believe that secretly they were used to train the U.K. Starbucks staff - who still pale in comparison.

After that you are in Indi territory...
