possibly broken 3do?

Post by lilmul123 » Mon Jul 30, 2007 10:45 pm

I just bought a FZ-10 from a local market, and it was working fine except for the fact that saved games wouldnt stay on the memory. I figured the battery was dead inside and sure enough, it's dead. So i pried it off, but broke one of the little resistor things next to the battery contacts and the CD switch (very miniscule). I freaked out, but everything was working fine yesterday even with the battery torn off. I even played a game. So today I bought a new battery for it, but now the CD-rom drive doesn't work. I can get to the "insert CD BIOS" but it won't load any game. Right now, I'm figuring there's something wrong with the switch. When I turn on the console, the laser reseats itself in-front of the spinner thing, but just sits there. When I press down on the cd drive switch, nothing happens; it just stays on the "insert CD" screen. That gives me the notion that the drive motors or anything aren't at fault, the switch is just broke.

Have any of you ever encountered this and is there any possible fix? I really don't want to find out I blew 50 bucks for a large paperweight.

I haven't dug into my 3do much but I wonder if you short the switch in question, the cd drive would work? Maybe something came loose after reassembly?

How could I go about doing that? do i put a wire between those two connections under the switch? Or maybe a dab of solder?

And no wire is loose btw. Every single connection is pretty tight.

How many wires go to the switch? I would try different combinations to ground/black. If it's dead then it's dead I figure.

Two I suppose. They aren't wires, the switch is directly soldered to the board.

I suppose I'll figure out how to pry the switch off and figure something out from there. There's gotta be someway to make it think there's always a CD in there.

alright, i pried the switch off. from what i can see, there is one lead, and a ground. The lead, coincidentally enough, goes from that minuscule transistor to that lead. Since it worked yesterday, I'm supposing that there was enough metal to that transistor to make a circuit, but now there isn't. So what I what I'm considering doing is taking the tiny transistor and soldering it on there, and then soldering the lead from the switch directly to the ground. The bad side to this is that I can't take out a game while it's running..but that's not really a big deal.

Success! My theory was correct. The transistor that was leading to the switch wasn't making sufficient contact to the board leads and so the switch didn't work. I soldered it back on, and then shorted the leads for my now torn-off switch, and the disc spins up and is read!

Now the only problem is is that since i broke the switch off, i have to permanently solder those two leads together. Whenever the 3do is on, the disc will be spinning always. I guess that's better than having a 3do that doesn't work at all.

Thanks for the help!

PS: Expect to see more of me on these forums. I absolutely adore my new 3do and was pretty shaken up when i found out it was "broken." You all seem like a nice group of guys so I'm gonna stick around for a bit :D
