Looking for old Gex dev interview

Post by sneth » Wed Nov 18, 2015 6:01 am

Many years ago I read a fascinating article from one of the developers of Gex. They went into detail on how unprepared people were for developing 32bit sprites for a 2d platformers. It was a challenging effort to make Gex and people don't appreciate it enough.

Does that ring a bell with anyone? Link? PDF?

I really enjoyed reading that. I think that the frustration involved making that game really showed in the final product. I never liked Gex, I found the controls aggravating and the game concept all over the place and incoherent.

I loved it, but the Saturn version is a fair bit smoother and controls nicer.

I'll admit, the art design is something of a weak point in the otherwise amazing Gex, and this story does a fair amount to explain why.

I find it funny how much the original concept for the game sounds just like Bug Too! for the Saturn.

Anyway, good read. Gex is such a packed game with, as critics noted back in the day, simply oodles of secrets in every level, so it's no surprise that it was such hard work to get it done.

that was the one. forgot to reply >,<

There's always people talking about how games didnt seem 32bit, and this is a good explanation why it took a while for devs to catch up.
