How important is the map for Star Control II?...

If you have the instruction manual for Star Control II, how important is it to have the map? Or was that just included as a kind of bonus for purchasing the game?

The map is quite handy. The game has a built-in map, but due to the restrictions of screen size, it doesn't reflect the different sizes of each star system, doesn't show the territorial boundaries of each alien race, and doesn't display the name of a system unless you move your cursor over it. So if you're looking for a specific system, you have to slowly run your cursor all over the in-game map until you find the one you're looking for. All that said, the map isn't strictly necessary to play the game.

This. The map is very useful though. It's probably one of the few moments where I can agree that the "Complete" version really makes a difference here. Again, not the most important thing to have, but it really is nice to have the thing and does make the game a bit faster moving if anything else.
This is a stick up! Put all of your 3DO games in the bag and nobody gets hurt!
