Magazine tidbits
I was browsing through Electronic Gaming Magazine some more and came across this little writeup on Escape From Monster Manor. I figured that if nothing else, Ewhac would be happy to know that the folks at EGM thought his game was pretty slick. What's all this about zombies, though? I haven't see any of those pop up in the Let's Play...

Re: Magazine tidbits
Zombies? Well Hell, what happened there? I don't even recall seeing Zombies in the game either. Perhaps there is another build of the game out there with the Zombies? Now it's time to see if we can dig this up. Perhaps there was another version of the game and they changed it before release. That actually kind of sucks actually!
This is a stick up! Put all of your 3DO games in the bag and nobody gets hurt!

Re: Magazine tidbits
Yeah, given the limited variety of enemies in Escape From Monster Manor, it seems bizarre that they cut one from the game before release. I suppose they had their reasons...
Here's a snippet from Sega Saturn Magazine which made my jaw drop. How can anyone cram so many factual errors into two little paragraphs? And these aren't just little oversights, either; they're "Where on Earth did you get the idea that that was the case?" mistakes.
Blazing Dragons on the 3DO would have been cool, though. It probably would have lacked mouse support, but hey, so does the Saturn version.

Re: Magazine tidbits
I was just going through Electronic Gaming Monthly #59 and found the 3DO version of Soccer Kid in their "International Outlook" section. Unfortunately, the article doesn't give any indication of why the game is there. Is it possible that 3DO Soccer Kid was looking like a PAL-only release at that point? Hmm...

The description in this article sounds uncannily like Slayer, but that sure isn't where the screenshot came from. Could this be Dragon Lore? Or a game that was never finished?

This one made me shed a tear. From the letters page of the May 1995 issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly:
Re: Magazine tidbits
I found the guy on facebook and Linkedin, he became videogame designer at Disney. It would be nice to know how ended his story with the 3DO.

Nice.

and dragon tales doesnt sound like dragon lore at all because dragon lore isnt all set in a dungeon there are tons of outdoor stuff to do, i remember going into a tree (had to shrink myself) and then the nightmare of the last castle. that picture doesnt look familiar at all

Re: Magazine tidbits
Thanks for the answer, Lemmi. So, another unreleased game, then? For some reason it just now occurred to me to take a look at the game's listed publisher. Software Toolworks. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think they did anything on the 3DO remotely like Dragon Tales. Though maybe the game eventually made it out for the PlayStation or something.

Re: Magazine tidbits
Everyone talks about the great fanboy war of Super Nintendo versus Sega Genesis/Mega Drive. But history seems to have forgotten an equally fierce war: the war between 3DO and CD-i fanboys!

Re: Magazine tidbits
They're probably referring to those games which use the MPEG upgrade card, which allowed the CD-i to run higher quality FMV than the 3DO, at least until the 3DO got its own video card (which wasn't until later).

Looks like whoever was writing this article on a Sega Saturn game had 3DO on the brain.

Re: Magazine tidbits
A while back we had a thread asking whether or not there were any 3DO games which turned a profit. I was going to post the below clipping there, but for the life of me I can't find that thread anywhere. Anyway, if anyone was still wondering whether or not there were any profitable 3DO games, here's your answer, courtesy of the October 1995 issue of GamePro:
Over one million copies sold before it became a pack-in game. Yeah, I think it's safe to say Gex must have turned a profit, even discounting the Saturn and PlayStation ports.

Re: Magazine tidbits
Want to know the real reason why we didn't get Mortal Kombat 3 on the 3DO (or Saturn or Jaguar)? Here it is, courtesy of the November 1995 issue of GamePro:
Re: Magazine tidbits
Regarding Dragon Tales, I found this from Questbusters (a newletter-ish magazine? I think?) here.
Now, Dragon Lore was released by Mindscape, which at that time had been bought by Software Toolworks. So I think Dragon Tales became Dragon Lore.
And this, from Edge Magazine, from here:Software Toolworks
Dragon Tales is Software Toolworks'
answer to Myst and The Seventh Guest. It
is a first-person, fully-rendered CD-ROM
game in which you must rid the land of
evil in a three-chapter story. The simple
interface not only controls the adventure
interface, but also the strategy and
action/arcade elements of the game.
Dragon Tales has gorgeous graphics and
backgrounds and a lot of smooth
animation.
Dragon Tales
From: Mindscape
Date: Mid '95
Coded by Cryo, the
same developers who
produced Mega Race,
Dragon Tales is a
sumptuous looking
adventure set in an age
of knights and dragons.
Boasting rendered
3D panoramic vistas
with 360-degree views,
plus lifelike animation,
Dragon Tales should be
well worth the wait.
Now, Dragon Lore was released by Mindscape, which at that time had been bought by Software Toolworks. So I think Dragon Tales became Dragon Lore.

Re: Magazine tidbits
I dunno if this is something you guys already knew, but it looks like GoldStar was planning on bringing Defcon 5 for the 3DO out in the USA. What you see below is an Electronics Boutique ad from the February 1996 issue of Next Generation. The cover date suggests that the release was likely cancelled when GoldStar decided to drop support for the 3DO. It also means that had they not cancelled it, it would have come out well before the Japanese release. So maybe the JP Defcon 5 is actually a localization of a USA version that never got released? I guess we may never know.
If that doesn't catch your interest, there's also a screenshot of the unreleased Golden Gate: Treasure by the Bay in there for you to enjoy.

Wasn't that UMK3 that was rumored for 3do, not MK3?

Re: Magazine tidbits
The Sega Saturn was originally planned to get a version of Mortal Kombat 3, but due to Sony's exclusivity agreement, by the time they were legally allowed to release it, Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 had been out in the arcades for several months. Thus, it only made sense to release Ultimate for the Saturn instead of old Mortal Kombat 3. My assumption is that the same thing happened with the 3DO.MathUser wrote:Wasn't that UMK3 that was rumored for 3do, not MK3?

Re: Magazine tidbits
Some more info on 3DO games which actually turned a profit... Seems that Battlesport was one of them. The April 1997 issue of Next Generation tells the tale in a feature on Cyclone Studios. Here's a link to some scans of the article.
Re: Magazine tidbits
These magazines now looking back on them were filled with so much misinformation.
