3DO Release Dates

Hello all, I've been a long time follower of the forum, but this is my first time posting. I wanted to go ahead and join up and post because I thought something I was working on might be of interest here.
I've long been leery of the release dates given on sites like Wikipedia, MobyGames, and GameFAQ. So I've tried to put together a more accurate list of release dates by crawling rec.games.video.3do. There were FAQs posted monthly from December 1993 through mid 1995 and again through the first half of 1996. Each FAQ contained a list of all the titles that were currently available. I matched each month against the next to see which titles were new and thus released in each month. The accuracy is dependent on the folks who wrote the FAQs being right about what was on the shelves but I believe its much better to get the release dates from a first hand source than the guesswork that seems to pass for accuracy on many sites these days. Also I should clarify that these are US release dates, I'm sorry I haven't gotten to searching for the European release dates yet and from my experience the Japanese release dates are fairly well documented. Perhaps in the future I'll get into the European release dates.
Of course this is far from perfect, I still have a number of other things to do to improve upon this list. Firstly like I said there is a gap in mid 1995 during which a lot of games got released so that's problematic. Secondly the 3DO demo discs have lists of games released when the discs were released. I have the dates of the demo discs nailed down pretty well with posts proclaiming "the new demo disc is here!" however some of the release lists from the demo discs don't perfectly match up with the list I got from the FAQs. I would also like to check the 3DO magazines and other gaming magazines to see when some games got reviewed to make sure the release dates are close. The FAQs also ended before the last 3DO games were released in 1996 which left me to look for specific posts about their release and to extrapolate from the announced release dates.
With that all said I'm gunna throw up the list I got so far. Let me know what you think.

Awesome post! I've long been wishing we could get the release dates of 3DO games sorted out. It's quite a surprise that Night Trap was a launch window game, too.

「ESPN BaseBall - Pitching」

Was this game put on the market?

You know what that's a good question. I hadn't noticed both baseball games in there.
The original source is the released games list on this FAQ on November 2, 1994.

https://groups.google.com/forum/#!searc ... KYITnrwKEJ

Under "Intellimedia Sports" they have every other ESPN game correctly listed as released and the ones that we know as being unreleased have dates in the future. ESPN Baseball Pitching appears to be the only game that doesn't fit.

This old website for Intellimedia Sports Inc does however list two different baseball related games at the top of the list. The first one "ESPN Baseball. Ron Fraser: Your Personal Coach" appears to be the game we know as "ESPN Baseball: Interactive Hitting" according to the text from the manual (I don't have this title)
https://archive.org/stream/ESPN_Basebal ... S_djvu.txt

But this list also includes other titles not released on the 3DO like Interactive Fly Fishing. It's possible there is a second baseball title but perhaps it did not release on the 3DO and the original FAQ made a mistake.
Reviewing the FAQ's list with close scrutiny I also notice it contains something called "Silly Classics - At The Museum" as something that's "In Stores Now" and is from the same company that made "Toontime In The Classroom". This also poses another mystery about whether it was ever released. But I guess the only way to really know that for sure would be for someone to produce a copy of it.

Amazing work Devin! Thanks for compiling and sharing out these lists.

I will admit, coming from the UK, I am also very/more interested in how/when games were released here.

But, more importantly still, I have no idea how many (exactly) 3DO games were officially released in the UK/EURO.

A definitive list doesn't seem to exist, it seems...

I'm kind of curious about that too, to be honest. Apart from my being a straight-up busybody about gaming history in other people's countries, I'd like to know which 3DO games are truly North American exclusive.

Pardon my newness but I actually have no idea what being a sticky means. It sounds good though so thanks!
Perfect opportunity to update my original list. I trolled through the Usenet archive again going game by game through 1995 so that I could nail down the games I could only list as between May and December last time. I also added information on the different launch dates around the world, when peripherals were released, when price drops occurred, and when different console models were released.
As with last time this is American information but I'm starting to collect European and Japanese release dates so that'll come next.

Interestingly I couldn't find a scrap of evidence for when DinoPark Tycoon was released. This fits right in with the fact that it's the rarest American release.

Awesome! I gotta ask, though... Are you sure about the release date of the mouse? It seems bizarre that it came out so late in the 3DO's life. Especially since at least two games (Lemmings and Shanghai Triple Threat) which support the mouse came out a year or more before that date.

It looks like your information confirms that Doom made it out before the Christmas deadline referenced in 3DO Kid's article. Good to know.

Funny how the two Iron Angel of the Apocalypse games came out in such short succession. I wonder if they were under development at the same time. (Still have yet to secure a copy of the sequel.)

Ya know you're right my mouse date is a little late. The earliest I could find the mouse showing up is around August of 1995, not October of 1995. However you're right 3DO users were apparently waiting over a year for the mouse to show up and some of the posts reflect that.

- Complaints mouse is more than a year overdue

- 3DO employee confirms mouse has begun shipping direct from 3DO
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!searc ... 1Y-w_-aWsJ

As for Doom it doesn't appeared to have made it out by Christmas but it did make it out before the end of 1995 although just barely.

- Doom shipping December 29

- 3DO Owner Playing Doom For First Time December 31

As for Iron Angel this is interesting. Iron Angel of the Apocalypse is actually just the American version of a game called "Tetsujin" that was released right around the Japanese launch in April of 1994. So the release of Iron Angel in April of 1995 is actually just a localization which makes more sense for why the sequel was out so quickly since the original title was originally released in April 1994.

Wow, that is really bizarre. So many mouse-supported games released before the mouse itself was available, and you can see from those posts that it was just as bizarre (and far more frustrating!) back in the day.

I know that the Iron Angel of the Apocalypse series is Japanese, but from what I'm told The Return has more cutscenes than the original, so you'd expect its localization to take more time, not less.

By the way, not that it matters but I found additional confirmation of your release date for the Horde here.

I have believed for a long time that a definitive guide like this is a great idea. Anyone with some skill and time (neither of which I have) please feel free to collate and put in an editable sticky.

Thanks for the scan, Fujisan! Very interesting info. I have to ask... Why was San Goku Shi IV (Romance of the Three Kingdoms IV to us in the West) priced at 14,800 Yen - almost twice as much as most 3DO games?! It's not even a multi-disc game!

Also, just curious, but the first person shooters (e.g. Virtual Horror, Tetsujin, Tetsujin Returns, Doom) have their genre listed as "3D [something something]". What does that translate to?

Hah, interesting. I didn't notice that so many of those were Koei games.

By the way, for anyone else that doesn't read Japanese letters, I used a bit of research on GameFAQs to confirm the Roman script names of several of the games on the list. The Japanese launch lineup for the 3DO is:

Ultraman Powered
The Life Stage: Virtual House
Wacky Races
Fire Ball!! (a.k.a. Real Pinball)
Pebble Beach Golf Links
Yamamura Misa Suspense: Kyoto Kurama Sansou Satsujin Jiken

A pretty good variety of releases, at least. It's nice that they had some Japanese-oriented titles available right off the bat, too.

I've found a possible error in your release dates. Electronic Gaming Monthly #78 - the January 1996 issue - has a review of Captain Quazar and lists it as "Out Now".

Reviewing further, it seems like many of the 1996 release dates are late. Perhaps 3DO fans simply weren't keeping up on the latest releases at that point. Lucienne's Quest, for instance, you have listed as June 1996, but it was reviewed in the May 1996 issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly, which suggests an April 1996 release date.

A most curious one is Casper; you have it listed as September 1996, but Electronic Gaming Monthly #80 (March 1996) has a preview for the game listing its release date as March! This is supported by Video Game Discounters listing the game for sale in the April issue. But wait, maybe the game was delayed, and Video Game Discounters was just taking preorders? So I checked on a couple other magazines, and could find nothing. Most strikingly, Sega Saturn Magazine too initially reports a March 1996 release date, but the last issue to give a complete listing of PAL Saturn games that are out still doesn't list Casper - and that issue is dated September 1997! I haven't browsed through all the news sections of these old mags yet, so hopefully I'll stumble upon something that will tell me what the heck was going on with this game. Unless someone here happens to know?

They almost never get it right. That's why I never really bother with emulation outside of Kega fusion. If I really like a system I just gotta have the real thing.
