Another couple quick tips, for most of City 1 and the long straight section of Coastal 1, you can drive on the far left shoulder without losing speed provided you dont rub the invisible wall.

Once you get that skill up, it is possible to reach 202mph on Coastal 1 by driving on the dirt of the left shoulder, you must carry as much speed around the sweeping left onto the long straight as possible, around 165mph exit speed, you can stay reasonably straight along the edge, careful how you line up the hill because youll jump, and you must hit the picks just at the sign indicating the hard left up hill at the end of the straight, downshift to 4th, count 2 seconds, then drop it back another cog. You will lock up and skid, but also shed alot of speed.

It takes just the right timing, but most of all good luck with traffic placement is critical, if you come to a crest and both lanes are occupied, you will not make it through unless youre lucky enough that the cars are at the outer edges of the lanes.

Use the shoulders as much as you can.

The best way around the cars going your way is to stay in the lane theyre in where possible, they are almost always on one side of the lane, giving you space to pass. Quite often this means pass on the shoulder side, and you can often do it without losing much, if any, of your speed, and still maintain a reasonable line.

Shift just before the redline. Learn the speed each car will do in each gear, it makes it alot easier. Once you get to know the cars, you will know approximate speed and RPM without even looking.

Dont downshift while trying to increase speed just because there may be 5 more mph in the previous gear, you lose speed on the shifts, and in many cases you dont gain anything even though it seems you do. Downshift when youre 10-15mph below the shift point.

The second segment is always the easiest. Speeds are incredibly high in the first, making it difficult to avoid traffic.

Build up to being fast. Use caution everywhere, and dont push the car beyond the limits of the situation. You will find that slow and steady not only wins the race, but also improves your skill much quicker and helps you to learn the limits for each corner.

I think I put us both in the white Porsche's.

The Porsche is grey coloured, only the Honda NSX is white, and its a terrible car.

Whatever. We're both in the white cars. I like them. I'll try others.

The Porsche is not a bad car, but very tail happy under brakes. Its quite a dark grey colour.

The Honda is very hard to lose control of, but its slower than a wet week. Basically any other car will flog it with ease.

The more I play this game, the more I notice in some way the other vehicles (besides the cops) have a life of their own. They get in wrecks, jammed up etc. It's very interesting.

If you go back and check again, you'll see that the PS1 version is MUCH nicer looking than the Saturn version.

The Saturn version is really rather crude visually, by comparison, tbh: 3DO > PS1 > SAT

(Although, the way the PS1 & SAT handle/draw the gfx is COMPLETELY different i.e. is proper 3D on SAT & 3DO)

-

Also, I always prefer to use the Ferrari, Porsche & Lamborghini, personally. I tend to avoid the Supra, RX7 & NSX, not because I dislike them, but because they don't compare with the other 3 mentioned. Corvette sits right in between/the middle of those 6 for me...

Can you elaborate on this?

Heh.

To be honest, I put BOTH the 3DO & PS1 versions on yesterday and it isn't anywhere near as 'COMPLETELY' different as I remember it. However...

It's more about how the game handles the camera vs how it handles the game. For me, in the 3DO version, I feel like the camera is on a predetermined path and you simply control the car within those constraints. It shifts slightly from left to right, depending where you are on the road.

On the other versions, I feel like the camera tracks the car more (although, you still cannot drive backwards!) and, to me, gives the game a different, more authentic '3D' feel.

Also, I wouldn't be surprised (although I know ZERO about this stuff) if 3DO NFS's track layouts were all done using sprites of some description vs polygons for the SAT/PSX versions...

I seem to like the textures on the ground and backgrounds a bit more on the 3DO version. I know they tried to make them look more detailed and such on the Saturn and Playstation, but it actually helps to make the game look more muddy...just cleaner on the 3DO is all I am saying.

I like this game more and more the more I play it. very good game. It has its own personality. Hasn't gotten old yet even with only 3 tracks.

Still my favorite racer of all time. Yeah, I've wished forever that the 3DO version had more courses, but the 3 there are like old friends to me now, just like there are certain roads in real life that you have traveled for years, but still are fun because the cars are fun to drive. I play racers from 16-bit to the 360 and still NFS on 3DO is my favorite. I've cut back over the last couple of years, to playing probably once a month, but 15 or so years I played on nearly a daily basis, hence my incredible racing times. I can get better time with the Ferrari on any segment or course than with any other car. And the ONLY way anyone will ever match or beat my times is with the Ferrari, Believe me that after so many years and 1000's of hours of play, I know. I'm sure I can beat anyones times with any car they choose, but i can't beat my own times with anything but the Ferrari. So to those who claim to be catching up to me, be warned. Pro skill only, because you will never come close with automatic transmission, it must be manual, and Ferrari only too.

That is fantastic Casethecorvetteman, I've been waiting years for a new challenge.I assume you've posted your times, I'll take a look and see what I have to accomplish. I'm so excited. If you could beat my times, then it gives me new confidence that I can beat my old times, and hopefully yours as well. Guess I need to perfect my lines some more! KUDOS KUDOS KUDOS...to you.

I may have already beat my old times and even Case's for all or know, or not...since I posted those times I sold my 3DO and bought another back a year later, and have all new times on a different 3DO, which i haven't compared to any times here yet.
In any case, I will get back to it as soon as I can.

I'm liking this Case guy so far though, finally someone in my league with 3DO NFS, and we both play on a projector. though my projector use to display a 150" screen in my old place and my new place is much smaller, so I'm down to about a 75" screen now.

It definately beats the other versions. I loved this game when I was younger. It's probably the best game on 3DO overall.

Does the 32-bit MS-DOS version count in this competition? It has 640x480 resolution support. ;) It doesn't have as much FMV as the 3DO version though AFAIK. Maybe some of the FMV was exclusively produced for the 3DO release.

I swear I remember the MS-DOS version being just like the 3DO version, gameplay wise. I have it. I'll give it a whirl today.

I had both versions and they were pretty much identical. I just hate playing video games on a computer, so I never much liked the PC version. I'm 46 years old now and I bet I spent 28 years of my life playing NFS on my 3do!

I can't figure out how to select the X man's car. I used to be able to do it but I seem to have forgotten. I have the instructions but they tell me to use the Left Right shift buttons but all that does is change my car .
