Ebay Watch in Your Region.
Posted: Wed Oct 03, 2012 11:40 am
I want to bring back trading. But not person-to-person. I want to use ebay (or another site) as a middle man basically for the security it provides the buyer and the seller.
What do people think of creating an 'Ebay watch' sticky or something, so people around the world can watch for items for other members? With the ability of getting ebay trades to people in other territories?
Personally, i'm happy to get items from ebay and have no problem shipping them out.
For example: People looking for the UK 3DO Magazines? Or a 3DO Blaster? Or the European Jewel case versions?
I think rules will be: signed for shipping only, no profiteering on postage, everything done at cost.
Or we can do closed auctions on ebay.
I'm against private trading with all but the most trusted people on here, I've had some great experiences with some people but because in the past there have been arguments getting to the point of calling the Police - i shut it down. This was between myself and a guy here in the UK. eBay provides a degree of security that we can't do here, but i appreciate peoples desire to trade items.
The other option is a to use 100% openess. Prices, agreements, shipping details (except for the very most personal details) are all posted and the whole forum moderates deals.
Ideas, thoughts, comments?

Wow, never realized it was that
But if you are looking to re-open it, I thik it could work w/the security or Ebay. At the very least, using that process would weed out the riff raff.
I've had so many great buying/selling/tradig experieces here on the forums that I've lost track! Multiple dealigs w/you, 3DOExp, Lemmi, Austin, Mattyg, etc ... (sorry if I'm leavig people out) People who are well established here, and who I wouldn't hesitate to deal w/again. But it's true, it does only take 1 or 2 bad instances to sour you on the whole idea ...
While I'm kinda content w/the process we already have i place
I'd be curious to see what others think.

I am all for this however..
1)I think evilbay/paypal is a safe way to do thing, but what if I wanted to
make the items for sale specifically to those people on these forums?
If/when I sell things I would rather they go to people who will keep them in
their collections or need them vice someone who is going to buy them at my
price to inflate them to the normal super high evilbay price. I mean it can
still happen but less of a chance if I sell to one of you guys. That way
prices could stay reasonable.
2)I think Gamegavel.com is another viable auction source. I have not used it
but it is has a very good reputation.
3)What if we are looking just to trade items? Like I list a bunch of items I
have for trade and what they are offering? Or a section where people post
items they are looking for .. like want ads?
4)I think atariage has a good model for this because you very rarily see any
flaming on there, however it is heavily watched by the mods. Where you have
a main forum called market place (or something) then a sub forum called
auctions, another called Wanted, another called For Trade .. etc
Just my 5 cents (USD of course)

I think this would be the better way to go.
"The other option is a to use 100% openess. Prices, agreements, shipping details (except for the very most personal details) are all posted and the whole forum moderates deals."
With a feedback thread so people can see who's to be trusted.

I think it would be a good idea to open up member-to-member trading again but how you police this would be difficult.
Maybe you could set up a '3DO Forums' Paypal account that is controlled by one of the forums owners/moderators who acts as the middle man for all member-to-member purchases? Would cost a little more in Paypal fees but would pretty much guarantee buyers and sellers get their money back if something goes wrong?
And/Or, like ScarletKitten says, open up a separate trading area of the forum which allows users to gain feedback much like eBay.
Opening this back up again would allow us collectors to trade/buy some of the rarer titles and like 3DOKid says, allow people looking for certain items that don't ship to their territory to get hold of them.

I agree with Scarletkitten.. A dedicated trade subforum, with feedback section. It seems to be working on most game forums really. Ive purchased like that on sega-16.com, and on neo-geo.com through the years. Ive asked for referenses, and gotten them if they werent in a thread on that particular forum. Deals have gone down well.
Few are the times ive had issues with online trading, and they have all been on ebay.

An Ebay section is a good idea. People can post links to auctions that they think someone might be interested in, or they can even host private auctions if they would like. Leaving that be the extent of it would make for a safer endeavor for all involved.

You post images and a description here.
You then at an agreed time and time, put it on ebay as BIN (buy it now)?

...... Hmmm that doesn't sound too terrible.

As long as people don't forget to put their GMT offset, it should work fine right?

I have another suggestion. A swedish airsoft forum i sometimes use does it this way. They only allow the seller/buyer to post in the actual sale thread, price needs to be there and they require you to register your social security number (since its mainly swedish people using it) to verify your age (since 18+ is required by law to own airsoft guns) as well was your full adress to be able to even access the trading forums. obviously condition and preferably pictures of item up for sale is also required in the post, including its brand (if known). No one else is allowed to post in the thread what so ever, so there is no possibility of discussion or flame wars. Only pm to the seller/buyer. The way we could use this here, is have a similar "verification" access to the trade forums, which is then revoked from people who are abusive or miss-use it, at a moderators discretion. I think thats the best way to have a trade subforum of some kind. Especially combined with a feedback section of the trading subforum where people can give feedback on people's behaviour. Like how well they communicate, package things, dispatch time, ability to grade items accurately etc..
If you add a locked disclaimer thread clearly stating that the forum takes no responsibility over trading subforums, and reserves the right to moderate or remove posts i think that could really work without creating unnecessary headaches. You can never be foolproof from well, fools, even on ebay. Could also put in a rule that Paypal must be used, where a degree of legitimacy is also available, as well as protection for both seller and buyer.
The whole "put it on ebay at an agreed time" leaves open for more misunderstandings as i see it, and people can forget or miss to buy on time, and also a freak "accident" that someone else might buy the item.
The whole idea of trading subforums is for a seller and buyer to agree on a sale, trade, whatever, without using ebay.
Gamegavel would be a better choice for that "ebay"-option, since fees are much lower or non existent. I havent done much business there, just one buy, so that doesnt necessarily mean anything, but that went well.
I would still prefer real trade subforums over an ebay-linked forum, or none at all. I have certain things im looking for, like the 6-button Fire-brand IR controllers, but ebay-style wont really help me find those, a "wanted"-subforum would. Just an example.

That sounds interesting. What I'm trying to do is avoid responsibility. In the past disputes have ended up with me getting involved, and there isn't much i can do obviously. With a fair number of multinational members social security, NI, passport numbers don't have much value.
Doing it all through ebay, means, whatever happen,s ebay can sort it out, but people here can trade amongst themselves securely.

We, as in the forum users, can always discuss further what we use to try and verify users.. I know the ID thing is difficult on a multinational forum as this, but im sure we can come up with something. But responsibility can like i said be negated with a disclaimer, and non post policy in the threads to keep speculations turning into bad threads. And paypal can help sort disputes much the same way as ebay does. Especially after ebay aquired them some years back.
I think its worth further discussing this option, or a variation of it to suit this forum better, rather than the proposed private auction thingy.
Im not the most active person on this forum, so i dunno how much say id have, or how many people would listen to me, but i do believe this would be the best option brought up so far, to develop further.

I'm like a giddy little girl just thinking about being able to trade and buy/sell here. On the east coast in the US, I see very very few 3DO things in the wild, so having another avenue to utilize would mean the world to me.
I like the idea using a verification system through the forum itself, as I would much rather see the deals and what-not going to the people we have all become aquainted with here.

I think that shopping on Amazon and eBay can only get you so far, but amongst us collectors on this site, we have items that you wouldn't find on eBay unless they demand high prices. If there is a way we can safely and securely pay for items and have protection from the scammers, then maybe we can try this idea out.

I don't know what happened with this, but here's an auction I stumbled across. Instant 3DO collection (well, minus any sort of hardware). Lots of complete games, including Star Control, Robinson's Requiem, and more. If I hadn't been forced to take the last two weeks off of work (and thus not getting paid), I would jump on it since I sold most of my 3DO collection. Even at the BIN price, I think it's reasonable, considering many of these games don't pop up frequently with their boxes: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Instant-3DO-Gam ... 337d40c416

Heck, don't do it man! I've got more games than that to sell (70 I think) plus some hardware (just controllers and such; no 3DO console itself) and I'm only hindered by Ebay forcing me to post only 4 items at a time!
Speaking of this plight of mine, if I wanted to sell to my 3DO Zone forum bretheren, how would I do so? Am I not allowed to post this?

Best bet is to send a pm direct to me.
Seriously though, I'd pm 3DOExp. I'm pretty sure that w/your contributions to the 3DO community there is a way you could. Hope that doesn't sound too cryptic.
