B.C. Racers - Version Differences?

Hi all,

Just picked up B.C. Racers (for the 3DO of course). Though the game can get quite pixelated (especially while zoomed out), I was actually impressed by the character designs, background art style and how vivid and clean the colors were. The game chugged a little in 2 player split screen, but I am glad the option was included.

While playing I found myself wondering how the other three versions of the game (Sega-CD, Sega 32X, PC) stacked up to the 3DO version. Were the graphics as clean and bright? Was the frame rate better or worse? Were the endings any different? I understand that at least the Sega-CD version didn't have split screen. Just curious if any of you have happened to make a comparison?

Good question. I'd imagine all the versions were terrible ... BC Racers on 3DO has one of the worst frame rates I've ever seen!

Perhaps the color is improved on 3DO, but I doubt anything more. Still would be nice to hear from someone who has endured both.

I've only played the 32X version. I was unimpressed. It moved choppy, had slippery gameplay, and wasn't very fun. Can't comment on the Sega CD or 3DO versions.

..and all this time I thought mine was choppy because I have a big ole scratch in my disc!

So I'm assuming that means the 3DO version is choppy too?

Mine is no matter what system i try it on but I always attributed it to the disc being scratched.

It really is awful. It almost animates like a flipbook.

You can be driving a straightaway, and all of the sudden you'll be facing a corner. You'll think "What happened, did I fall asleep for a few seconds? Suffer a mini stroke?" Nope, it's just the game trying to chug along and update.

It is BC Racers though, so just try to picture a Flinstone bird chiseling graphics on a stone slab w/it's beak. They'd probably look almost as good, and update just as quick. :P

Damn. It sounds like the 3DO version got the short end of the stick. The 32X version isn't anything special, but it's not that bad. What you are describing, Trev, sounds like the first Wacky Races game on the 3DO. It's a shame how certain 3DO titles were nerfed, when in reality they should have been the best versions available.
