How does Microcosm play compared to Novastorm??...

Post by dave4shmups » Mon Sep 26, 2011 1:31 am

I LOVE Novastorm on the 3DO, and I love Psygnosis shooters. So, I'm wondering if the controls, and the game play in general, are as good in Microcosm on the 3DO as their are on Novastorm. As long as the controls are good, I will put this on my to-get list.

Novastorm is the much better of the two in my opinion. I like the story behind Micrcosm (even if it is borrowed) but there isn't enough visual variety for me. It also seems more cramped, making it easy to hit not just enemies but the sides as well.

For me, basically what Trev said. It's way too easy to slam into walls in Microcosm. Novastorm is much more open. The visuals aren't shifting around as much either so the overall look is a lot more consistent, IMO.

OK, thanks guys! The spaceship shooter where I had the most problems slamming into things was Star Wars: Rebel Assault II - The Hidden Empire, for the PS1. The environments were very cramped, and the controls were just awful.

Novastorm was the sequel to Microcosm nobody wanted?

I love Novastorm. The 3DO version (and also the FM Towns version) are by far the best. The PS1 version is entirely different, very dumbed down and a different graphics engine. Novasorm 3DO is a thing of beauty, from the music to the scenery.

Microcosm is a bit meh to be honest.

Novastorms controls are better (not great) but better.

Oh nice! That would enable me to practice on different levels, which would rock! :D

It's still not easy to complete. The last stage is out to kill you. I wish i understood game guru enough to push the number of available lives up. Also, despite the first 3 levels being quite beautiful to simply watch, the forth one is neon 1980's hell. Nasty looking.

Burning Soldier is worth a go and so is pyramid wars. Almost as good but not quite. :)

Agreed, Burning Soldier is pretty decent for what it is. There's no dodging, but for a pointer-based rails shooter, it does what it does well.

Thumbs up from me too, for both Burning Soldier and Pyramid Intruder.

Of course the best 3DO space shooter, imho, is Starblade! :)

Starblade is tear jerkingly beautiful in my honest opinion. It's not even in the same league, it's in another galaxy :)
