Flashback rating curiousity

Post by Trev » Wed Nov 17, 2010 1:51 am

The CD-i & Jaguar versions are rated K-A (Kids to Adults, Ages 6+) This is what the E rating is today.

The Sega cd version is a bit stricter with its rating, giving Flashback an MA-13 (Teen today) :?

But the 3DO version ... 17 (An M rating by todays grading!) :o

I have a lot of respect for 3DO & Sega rating the software that appeared on their platforms before it was required, but it seems that they were overly strict perhaps ...

What do you think is an appropriate rating for Flashback? And why such varied opinions?

That's strange. As far as I know, the 3DO version is the same as the Sega CD version, minus the in-game soundtrack. Weird.

Oh come on. That bit near the start where that lion thing jumps down, that's a bit scarey. and when I say a bit, I mean I screamed like a weedy girl.

Pffft ... Flashback improved on OOTW in almost every way you can imagine.

I like both games, but FB still holds up well even today ... OOTW not so much. Flush your mind of the nostalgia and your left w/a game that is heavy handed on the trial & error gameplay ... which helps mask how incredibly short it is btw. Seriously, the 1st level of FB is probably as long as the full OOTW game!

There are many other big edges FB has, but I'll hold back ... for the moment ...

flush my mind of what?

You clearly have no sense of style.

Style? They were both from Delphine. Heck, Flashback is still commonly called the sequel to OOTW despite the fact that the only thing connecting them is that they were made from the same studio and share some similarities in look & control.

As for style, I like my animation smoother, my characters less blocky, my control more robust, my levels longer, and my gameplay less linear. What can I say, I'm a freak that way.

Mobius

I'm with you on this one, Trev. Out of this World is a good game, but Flashback is GREAT and holds up much better today.

As for the rating differences, I've only played the 16-bit cart versions. Do the pre-rendered cut-scenes in the 3DO version have some gruesome content?

Thanks Mobius! I knew I could count on you. :D

As for the cutscenes ... they were enhanced over the 16 bit cart ones (they are not neccesarily better or worse, but they are different) The thing is ... the 3DO versions are the same as both the CD-i's & the (grainy) Sega cd's. So ... yeah, I still don't get it.

Delphine was involved in both, but OOTW was primarily made by one guy (who had nothing to do with Flashback, IIRC). They may have just provided funding on that project? Who knows.
