Best games on the 3DO.

Post by 3DOKid » Sun Jan 14, 2007 2:44 pm

This question is bound to crop up a lot. Which are the best games for the 3DO.

3DO had a mixed bag of games. I'm quite the 3DO fan so...

#1 best games:
- Space hulk. Strategy FPS? better than Doom IMHO. Better than AvP on the Jag too. It's a thinking mans FPS!
- NFS.
- Wing Commander III

More votes for:
- Gex (2D incarnation) is very good.
- Road Rash.
- SF2 Turbo. Best version.
- Samurai Shodown. DO NOT PLAY ON A PAL MACHINE. 60hz only. !!!
- Star Fighter. Impressive 3D engine!
- PO 'ed. Better than Doom and Wolfenstien.
- Theme park.
- Blade force. (I'm not a big fan!)
- Cannon Fodder. (Freakin' brilliant actually!)
- Return Fire. (A must have)
- Return Fire maps of death. An addon to the above.
- The Horde. (Fading as time passes!)
- Shockwave 1 & 2 and the add-on. (Very mediocre but definitely playable.)
- Taiketsu Rooms! Rare - even in Japan. Bomberman + water = Sanyo Japan only game. Fun / fustrating!

Other votes for:
- Lucienne's Quest. This was pretty good, no very good. Micro cabin had some relationship with Squaresoft and its very Final Fantasy in style. Expensive but good.
- Power Kingdoms (US: Guardians quest) Is very common and very good turn play strategy - Think Final Fantasy tactics. (Of a sorts)
- Casper.
- Total Eclipse. This is OK even today. Actually very good indeed.
- Starblade. (Was also available for PS1, etc.,)
- Another world. (Best graphics - I think anyway!)
- Flash back. (Best graphics version.)

Out there votes for: (acquired tastes really)
- Snow job - Interactive movie. Click based game. Best of the genre. Some nudity!
- Daedalus encounter. Worth a spin. (Assuming you don't pay more than a couple of quid for it!) Fun for Tia Carrera. (Grrr!)
- Strahl. In the same vein as Dragons Lair, basically interactive manga. I loved it!
- Creature shock. OK (ish) pretty rare and pricey though!
- Pebble Beach Golf. You will have seen it all before.
- Star Control 2. I don't like it but it has a cult following. Some people love it to death. Play the freeware version for the PC before splashing out in the 3DO version.
- Captain Quasar. Very, very OK too. Some people love it.
- Brain-dead 13. Fun. Over priced however.
- Immercenary. I loved this. Some (most) people didn't however.
- Killing Time. Enjoys a pseudo cult status, largely thanks to its Mac incarnation.
- Puzzle Bobble. Brilliant.
- Syndicate. Same as the Amiga version but very good.
- Psychic detective. Worst one in this list IMHO. Still a bit fun.
- Iron Angel 2. Avoid Iron Angel 1.
- Lost Eden. (Also appeared on the CDi?)
- Lemmings. (No different to anywhere else!)
- Demolition Man. (Sly fun...)
- Theme Park. Good - depsite the controller.
- Fifa - the best fifa game?
- John Madden - fun if you can be bothers to figure American Football.
- Cyberia. PC port. It's OK. Think Firefox (the movie) + Metal Gear Solid + Hell (3DO game) + early 1990's game mechanics. And you are there.

Party games.
- Twisted. Trip hawkins favourite 3DO game. (true fact!)
- Station invasion. (similar to the above)

I'll be in a minority of 1 with these:
- Virtual Camera man (Part 1 & part 2) By Part 3,4 and 5 it's a bit boring. Best soft porn game implementation. (Certainly better than Neurodancer anyway!)
- Ultraman.

Some interest if only nostalgic reasons.

- Shock wave (Featured in the first edition of Edge magazine)
- Microcosm. Crap game but the 3DO had the best graphics.
- Night Trap. As above.
- Megarace. As above.
- Corpse Killer. As above.

If you speak Japanese and can read Kanji these are woth the effort. (Or if know someone who can help you!)

- Hanako chan ga kite. (Hanako comes back - I think.)
- Yu Yu Hashuko.

Ultra Rare:
- Blue forest. (Japanese tat, nice looking RPG)
- Firewall - Korean onrails shooter.

Phew!

3DO Kid.

No the CD-i had the best graphics... well in prototype form at least!

Is Street Fighter II Turbo really that good? I've been tempted to get that special controller that was released for the game on 3DO.

The 3DO SF2 Turbo is a good step closer the arcade version than the SNES version.

I paid a kings ransom for Dragon Lore and never played it past that first sequence with the cow. For some reason I always think of Mel Gibson and Sean Connery and it puts me off.

Perhaps I should - especially if you are saying it is as good as all that.

its all a matter of taste, most of the time i like slow moving thinking games, where i can put down the controller and take a piss :) the fast moving games i seem to hold it in and keep playing

thats why Daedalus Encounter and Dragon Lore are on my list

You should try playing some Metal Gear Solid games! Plenty of time to take a piece during the cinematics :D

I quite fancy a bit of Wing Commander on 3DO, back in the day I played it on PC. Does the 3DO version hold up well?

heh the last Metal Gear game i played was on the NES system, i think it was snakes revenge

the only PC game i ever played for more then 10 min was Everquest (2 years) and Warcraft 2 (untill i got the Saturn version)

i just like the fact that Mark Hamill and Malcolm McDowell is in it, and i found it enjoyable, plus i got hooked into the story, but after i got trapped in space and running out of time or air i cant remember which i put it away and started playing Dragon Lore :)

oh and i seem to remember the music would change depending on how/what you were doing, the game makes you feel like you are there

on a side note, 3DOkid your blog is the 3rd listing on google for wing commander 3 3DO, i just did a search to see if i was right on the music changing :D

I quite enjoyed the Daedalus Encounter - I made it to the bitter end but the last puzzle was too much for me as I recall. It's just a pity we didn't get to see more Tia Carrera. [ahem]

The graphics for Wing Commander III on the 3DO are very good - I think the 3DO version was ported to PC - so... it's better! I reckon.

My List of faves

Post by fish » Tue Jan 23, 2007 5:32 pm

Here's my list of favourite 3DO games, quite a few will be similar to previous posts:
1. Need For Speed - It made me want a 3DO, best driving game ever?
2. Road Rash - Brilliant graphics and very fast too, a must have motorbike racer.
3.Killing Time - Imagine Alone in the Dark or even Resident Evil as a FPS, miles better than Doom.
4. Wing Commander 3 - Made for the 3DO, the best flight/space sim and FMV on the console. This game can really suck you in to the point where you may find yourself giving an evil laugh as you blast away at the Kilrathi.
5. FIFA - Still very playable even today, which says a lot when we're up to FIFA 2007! Just don't play the games in simulation mode, as it's far too slow.

Honourable mentions: The Horde, Po'ed, Battlesport, Olympic Summer Games, Lucienne's Quest, Starfighter, Demolition Man, Olympic Soccer, Return Fire, Space Hulk.

Don't touch with a barge-pole: Cyberdillo (the very final nail in the 3DO coffin), Seal of the Pharoah.

The PC version was the first one. And it has better graphics (higher resolution) than the 3DO version. ;)

Are you absolutely sure. I'm not arguing but I do recall the magazines citing the 3DO version as the better one.

Yes, I'm sure. I'm a big fan of the Wing Commander series after all. :) The PC version can be played in 640x480 and looks amazing then compared to any other version. Might be that the 3DO version had better quality FMVs, but that's hard to compare, as artifacts caused by a video codec are much easier to see on a sharp PC monitor than on a blurry TV set.

I often don't let the facts get in the way of a broad sweeping comment!

...Wing Commander IV was good too.

I do like Space Hulk, but can't say it is in my top ten only because it is so brutally hard! (thankfully I got the the two part strategy guide in 3DO magazine) I think WCIII is better than the PC version for a few reasons, but even if you prefer the latter it is worth playing on 3DO, since many of the missions are altered. For my fav game, I gotta agree w/Trip, Twisted is awesome! I still play it often, and have a blast. Even w/my friends, it is 2nd only to Mario Kart for multipalyer madness. NFS is a close runner-up (so much better than the PSX & Saturn ports) Oh, and since I haven't seen anyone else mention it yet, I gotta give a nomination to Pataank. Although it is an acquired taste, I love the cool music, and crazy visuals.

That would be a reason for me to not even try the 3DO version. ;) I only ever played a demo of the 3DO version, the full version is sitting on my shelf, still factory-sealed. :D

OPEN IT. NOW. Take pictures. Share the new game smell. or alternatively keep it sealed and in 20 years buy Luxembourg or something with the profits. Your choice.

My favorites in 2007 are the same ones I had in 1994: Road Rash, Return Fire, Twisted, FIFA, and Star Control II.

Those were the five reasons I gave to my wife when I explained to her that I was about to buy back my post high school memories on eBay a few years ago.

All awesome games (although I think you really need 2 players to get the most enjoyment out of Return Fire) A since Fifa was mentioned again, I gotta say I prefer it much more than Striker (not a bad game mind you) I just think it is better looking & more playable.
