What is that thing on the side of my 3DO?

Hey guys... I'm new to this forum, and new to the 3DO. I did some digging around but couldn't find an answer to my question in the forum, so... sorry if this (surely basic) question has been covered elsewhere.

I bought a Goldstar 3DO at a thrift shop. I don't have any games, but when I turn it on, the lights come on and the Goldstar/3DO logos come on the TV. The CD tray opens and closes just fine, but it won't play audio CDs.. the logos just keep rotating on the TV. Is there anything else I need to do to get the CD to play, or is this an indication that the CD drive isn't reading?

Also, I don't know if this is related, but the right side of the 3DO looks like it's missing something that used to cover and/or plug into the machine. There is a recessed area appx 3.5" x 2". Inside the recessed area is a space for some type of ... something... to be plugged in. Is the fact that there is nothing there the reason that audio CDs won't play?

you could always download a game and burn it to a CDR to test if it will play games, but the goldstar should play audio cds with no problem
there should be a screen that comes up with play/repeat buttons as well as other things and buttons, i cant remember exactly as i havent stuck an audio CD in a game machine in ages

the opening on the side is for the Video CD adaptor and it shouldnt cause any problems
