Differences between U.S. FZ-10 and Jap FZ-10

Post by shane_o » Wed May 04, 2011 8:40 pm

Hi guys, noob here. I just started getting into the 3DO, and I've done as much research as I possibly could, but still I apologize if this question is stupid.

I'm looking to buy a used FZ-10 and have actually stumbled across two in the wild not far from where I live. Both are boxed, but one is the U.S. version and one, I was told, is the NTSC-J Japanese version. The pictures and design of the boxes are very similar, but the U.S. FZ-10 is in a green/blue box while the Jap FZ-10 is in a pink/yellow box.

My questions for you guys are:

1) Is there any difference in the compatibility of either FZ-10 with games from any region? I read that both systems are region lock free, so I'm guessing they can both play either NTSC or PAL games?

2) The Jap FZ-10 in the yellow/pink box is slightly cheaper and it's not because of the aesthetic or functioning condition of the system. Both were proven to look and run well, as the guy selling them showed this right in front of me. So why do you guys think the Jap FZ-10 is being sold cheaper? Is it lesser quality? Is it known to have compatibility issues?

3) Finally, does the Japanese FZ-10 play games exactly the same as the U.S. version? Same framerate? Do English games have English subtitles and English language even if they are being played on the Japanese FZ-10?

Any information on the questions I asked above would be REALLY, REALLY helpful and I promise you will not go unappreciated. Look forward to hearing from the experts here! P.S. I'm leaning towards buying the Japanese FZ-10 right now, so if you think I am making a mistake in buying that one, please don't be bashful in letting me know!

Buy both and sell me the Japanese one.

Seriously though.. Not sure why it would be going cheaper. I'm not sure of any incompatibilities asides from some Japanese games that won't play on a US system because of certain character sets required (I believe the Jap version of Lucienne's Quest, "Sword and Sorcery," is one of these).
