Jag vs 3DO. The thread unlocked.

A lot of people thrive on urban legend and don't like to think for themselves or go against the grain, of course. Evidence of that is everywhere, not just on the web.
I don't know very many people who have even used a 3DO. I'm an all around gaming fanatic so I try to sample everything. But I don't really think 3DO is a platform with endless long-lost treasures to enjoy.... Neither is Jag. However they both do have a few interesting historical gaming curiosities that show innovation, and lots of nostalgia attached for people who followed all of this stuff closely back when it was "teh hot newness" (especially if they were unobtainable at the time).
Thankfully I didn't have to pay $700 to sample the library. Imagine if you had been a early 3DO adopter and waited eagerly for software but watched the library of primarily ultra shitty software grow, peppered with only a few decent titles. That's where the rep comes from. 3DO wasn't even primarily games, but also got some of that early/mid '90s multimedia garbage. Trip Hawkins didn't really understand entertainment software IMO and his competition kicked his ass.

Having owned a 3DO for a little while now and sampled a small collection of games, I'd say it's about on par with the Jaguar, though I'm sure my opinion will change over the next few months when I buy more games.
The 3DO easily had more potential and better capabilities but it's main downfall was the lack of quality software. Even now, looking on ebay and other sites, there's only a few games that I really want and some of those are available on other consoles. But, the Jaguar is the same. I have 9 Jaguar games right now and only plan on buying 2 more.
Both consoles are totally underrated though and helped lead the way for the 'next gen' consoles. Key features that are now standard on today's consoles were first tested out on the Jaguar and of course the 3DO. Unfotunately, they were too ahead of their time for the mainstream to really understand how unique they were.

Proud owner of a 3DO FZ-1!
I personally like the 3DO much better than the Jaguar. While I have never actually owned a Jaguar I have played many of the games. I have been wanting a 3DO for years and recently finally was able to get one. The Jaguar on the other hand I have never really wanted one.
After looking through all the Jaguars titles the only ones that look like I would even bother trying out are
Alien VS Predator
Breakout 2000.
Bubsy looks like an ok platformer but it looks like a Genesis game.
Flashback looks ok but it is also available on the 3DO.
Defender 2000 looks like it might be OK.
Then of course DOOM.
NBA Jam
Pinball Fantasies looks like an ok pinball game
Power Drive Rally looks like it could be fun
Raiden look like a mediocre shooter, but I would still try it out.
RAYMAN!
Ruiner Pinball- Second Pinball game listed but I would give it a go
Super Burnout- Looks Similar to Hang-On
Temptest 2000- Its an ok game, I really don't understand what all the rage is about this game though.
Theme Park- Again already on the 3DO
Wolf 3D- Available on 3DO and it looks like the 3DO version is better.
And out of those games the ones that I would actually put much time into would be
AVP
Doom
Wolf 3D
Rayman
I admit that is more games than I thought I would list, but still not that many. The Jaguar's 3D is just awful though, all of the games are untextured ugly polygons. Compare The Need For Speed on 3DO to Checkered Flag on Jaguar, 32-bits less but a million times better looking. I'm not bashing the Jaguar, but it is just not my cup of tea. I would take the 3DO anyday. I just thought the Jaguar didn't even have one lightgun game! Not saying that makes it horrible or anything, thats just strange because most every console had a gun controller. Sorry if I am rambling on, you'll have that from time to time.
