What was so great about about the Native demo?

I saw the demo on Youtube, so off i scampered to buy the Native demo -- did it ever get anywhere?

Several demo releases, but nothing significant, just credit changes mostly.

Duranik had the start of a nice shooter, the graphics are just amazing.
They also did the artwork in another recent jag cd release from Matthias Domin.

Honestly I thought Trevor McFur was not too far behind it, and THAT game was complete. And had sound.

And to me that is the biggie. Sure Native was impressive looking, but they did it I heard at the cost of the sound.

So Native is fun to play for the 5 minutes it takes to get through level one, but after that, I drop in Trevor McFur and play the rest.

I recently received a copy of Sturmwind - which is a dreamcast game that Native seems to have evolved into (similar concept, same developers, developers acknowledge the origin of the Sturmwind project as Native). It's pretty impressive on the DC console and the developers had good ideas for how to push the console spec in terms of large high resolution sprites and lots of gorgeous pre-rendered smooth animation. It's pretty incredible to see what they were able to stick into the DC's 16mb of ram. Gameplay and music are very polished as well. It would have been very impressive to see a paired down version of this on the jag.

Ah, Native, what could have been :wink:

Well there is no telling what might yet be with Duranik and the Jag. They say they are watching the Impulse X sales to see whether to move forward on the Jaguar. With what, I do not know.

impulse X is a simple but polished looking arkanoid. Not sure many Jag people are going to jump on that.

I do want to get Sturmwind, but I miss the direction they were heading with Native. Native was looking to be a fantastic homage to R-Type, whereas Sturmwind is a pretty different, faster paced experience from what I can tell. Less "thinking man's shooter", and more "manic shooter". Anyway, that's not to downplay it at all--it looks absolutely incredible, and I look forward to paying the credit lines down a bit so I can snag a copy.

Perhaps. Also its on CD rather than cartridge for now which limits sales a bit. Duranik should be looking at OOTW which hit 200 sales quite quickly in pre-order to gauge whether to go forward on the Jag or not IMO.

However watching everyone's experience with the pre-order of Sturmwind I won't be jumping on any pre-orders anytime soon.

To be fair, the ridiculousness of the Sturmwind pre order fiasco seem to be due entirely to Red Spot Games, the publisher - and not the development team Duranik themselves.

“We had a lot of production issues with our special edition packaging,” Graf said. “This is the reason the game was delayed for several months.” They left the manufacturing, marketing, and distribution of Sturmwind entirely in the hands of RedSpotGames.

I'm not so sure Red Spot has their stuff together. Granted, things can and do go wrong in manufacturing, but I don't think it was necessarily just that. Even their eBay store seems to have issues. Last Summer I ordered Wind & Water: Puzzle Battles on the Dreamcast from them, and sheesh.. It took a month for the thing to arrive to me. I don't think that was entirely due to the transit across the ocean either--it took them a good two weeks to even mark the damn thing as shipped.

Comparatively, I've ordered multiple items from NG:DEV team (someone else that's across the ocean), and never had such a delay. Red Spot should definitely get their act together (updating their web site wouldn't hurt, either).

The game was delayed for several years :lol:
The reasons have been, in no particular order:
-finding manufacturers for the LE items
-substandard construction of LE items
-usual cd pressing plant went bankrupt and it took time to find a new one willing to do the order
-new cd pressing plant recorded/pressed the discs, but did not do them in the correct format as needed for a self booting dreamcast disc despite emphasis on this point by RSG
-standing by for a new order of pressed discs

Altogether a true production nightmare. What really set people off recently though is that RSG asked for additional money for expedited shipping and tracking numbers, and then for an unknown reason, waited about 2-3 weeks before sending people's orders out directly from RSG. People worried RSG just took the money and ran, but at least that's not the case as people are finally receiving their RSG ordered copies now.

IMO this last hiccup is probably because RSG had wholesale agreements to sell many copies to different resellers such as playasia, and as the shipments were coming in, they needed to make sure they had a sufficient quantity to send over to the reseller's first. If they were short on the agreed upon wholesale orders, then they would damage their future business relationship with the resellers. In retail, not meeting a wholesale order for a retail outlet such as best buy or walmart will result in the retailer blacklisting you and not ordering from you again. Damaging relationship with 20 or 30 individual consumers is preferable to damaging a relationship where you could have sold the equivalent of 300+ copies.

That's my unrequested speculation at any rate.
